It’s a topic that’s long been discussed within affiliate marketing – which referrer gets paid commission on sales? Who should be rewarded? Last referrer wins usually means that affiliates who have introduced a customer to a brand or product, only to have them visit another affiliate site before purchasing, lose out.

Yesterday (June 14th) MoreNiche, who specialise in health and diet type products, introduced “split commissions”. This will allow their merchants to reward more than one referrer for sales.

Initially, the new structure is being tested by a single merchant on the network – Proactol. You can read all about the debate behind which referrer should be rewarded for a sale, and their new commission structures here.

So What’s It All About Andy?

I asked MoreNiche MD Andrew Slack a few questions about the new commissions and what effect they will have.

How did you pitch this to the merchant, i.e. what’s in it for them?!?

Proactol are a very forward thinking merchant and so it was pretty easy, the idea of them being the first ever weight loss merchant to reward first referrers and thus make their campaign more appealing than competitors really excited them.

Not only does this allow them to get more exposure across our network but also as we announce this new feature (for example on your sites) they may also attract new affiliates because they are the first to give it a go.

In a very competitive space, this will allow them to stand out in our network where we have 20-30 different weight loss merchants.

Do you envisage a greater uptake with your other merchants once the new structure is launched? Is there much interest amongst your pool of merchants?

We have already been asked by a number of other merchants to use this split commission feature but we want to monitor how well it works with Proactol before rolling it out to everybody, most merchants are asking about the first & last referrer with the understanding that the last referrer should retain the highest commission.

Less interest has been placed on incentivising affiliates throughout the chain but I believe this will become more important as we move forward and merchants want to become more competitive.

I personally feel that the first referrer is often more important than the last, these are the affiliates who are introducing the brand for the first time, often losing out to brand bidders or voucher sites for example, with networks becoming more dependent on coupon sites I feel split commissions allow the power to shift (even if it’s just slightly) to the content affiliates who are adding ‘more’ value to the brands themselves.

Any ideas what sort of percentage of sales have more than one referrer?

We ran the numbers for Proactol before pitching it to them and currently 39.46% of all sales have more than 1 referrer in its chain, this is quite high which we believe is down to the lifetime cookies we offer, it was interesting to see sales coming in from over a year ago, with over 15 affiliates in the chain.

Different sectors will vary whether it’s a impulse purchase or a calculated buy, our research shows that weight loss products are more impulse with most people purchasing within a number of days, often on the same day however on average a surfer passes through 1.85 affiliate sites before purchasing proactol and across our network the number is higher at 2.59 sites.

Good News For Affiliates In This Sector
I think the changes that MoreNiche are bringing in are great for affiliates operating in this sector. I was fascinated by the stats Andy gave me on how many affiliate sites people have been referred through before making the decision to buy (probably demonstrates how important it is to think about what people search for at the end of their buying process!). The new system of rewarding multiple referrers may also help a lot of their affiliates tighten up their conversion rates. Having the fact that a significant proportion of your cookies are being overwritten would be a great focus to look at your keyword targeting strategy and try to tighten things up.

The Start Of A Big Change In The Entire Affiliate Sector?

This new structure will certainly make merchants choosing to employ it stand out from the crowd in the competitve sectors MoreNiche are operating in.

However, would it have any application in the wider affiliate world? It’d be nice, but I’m doubtful. Margins are a lot tighter in other areas of online retailing. The cynic in me says we’re a lot more likely to see referral data being used to de-dupe affiliate marketing commissions against a merchant’s other internal marketing streams such as Adwords campaigns, newsletters, and possibly even magazine advertising where there’s a special offer involved.

I’m pleased to see MoreNiche taking this step, and hope it adds value to both their merchants and affiliates.

Ever wondered just how effective cookieless tracking technology really is? Wonder no longer! I do love a good metric and got a lovely end of month surprise when I logged into my POR account this morning. For the first time ever you can now see just how much of the revenue in your affiliate account would have been lost to deleted cookies if it weren’t for the alternate tracking methods deployed by the network.

I Have To Say I’m Seriously Impressed…

Upon checking out my revenue report I was presented with a very swish pie chart showing me what percentage of my sales was tracked by one of the secondary methods. It looked like this: -

A whopping 23.04% of all the commissions I earned with Paid on Results in March were credited to my account using this technology. I put a reasonable amount traffic through this network and the amount of revenue I would have lost is very significant. Certainly enough to give me a bit of a light headed moment when I saw it in black and white!

My New Best Mates…

For me this metric being made visible really reinforces my trust in the Paid on Results network. I’ve now been shown the cold hard facts of how they help me to make bigger profits, and I’m REALLY liking what I see. I was already a big fan of the more personal service I enjoy with them. As a case in point they told me to look out for a new feature coming in a few hours whilst answering a support ticket at some ungodly hour of the night, and asked for feedback on their new affiliate interface generally.

Not every affiliate network has implemented cookieless tracking just yet. If you’ve ever thought to yourself “gosh, it’s funny that my traffic with Network X does much better than what I send to Network Y”, maybe it’s time to consider it might be more than just a coincidence. This new report has reinforced to me the importance of weighing up more than just the merchants I want to promote – it’s clearly important to also look at how robust the tracking platform appears to be.

A+ to Paid on Results for transparency. Anyone else going to step up to the plate?

G’day from glorious Sydney!

We’ve been having a grand old time so far and yesterday we took up an invitation from DGM Australia and went on round to their offices for a bit of food and a few drinks on their rather fab rooftop terrace.

They were an incredibly friendly bunch and both myself and Chris Frost really enjoyed meeting the team, putting a few faces to names, and learning a bit more about what the network was all about.

Duncan, Chris, Jane (Chris’ lovely other half), Myself & Gavin of DGM fame enjoy a nice drinkie at DGM towers!

Retiring over the road to the pub for a few more jars…

Chris laden down and posing with his DGM goodie bags and Duncan lumbered with carrying a cocktail dress I’d bought on the way to the Do!

We had a really nice day, so thanks to DGM for putting on a right good do!

Interested In Finding Out More About The Australian Market?

I know that many affiliates in the UK are beginning to look at the Australian space and wonder if it is developed enough to create new income streams or have already started planning ways to enter the market. Looking at the range of merchants on offer from DGM alone, I feel e-commerce sites are definately becoming more developed and are starting to look to affiliate marketing to help them develop their online revenues. In particular, there are a very wide range of quality Australian finance merchants on the DGM network. Having had a quick gander I reckon that Aussie organic results and PPC arena is fairly wide open and accessible in comparison to the often cutthroat conditions in the UK. With recession not biting as deeply here in Australia, the industry has not seen the same issues with reluctance to issue credit (yet!).

Worth A Punt

I’m already working with DGM in Australia and have found the team to be incredibly friendly, helpful, and most importantly – responsive. With their help I’ve created the beginnings of a nice wee dollar revenue stream. If you’re considering working in this market you can sign up for the Australian network via the DgmPro site.

I must warn you that our Chris is already in posession of a full list of DGM merchants – so you’d better hurry up before he rushes in and dominates the Aussie affiliate marketing scene!

More about our affiliate related fun in Sydney when I’m back home later this week

Hot off the presses at R.O.EYE towers they’ve scored a massive business partner in the form of the recently launched Ebay partner network – the auction giant’s very own affiliate platform, replacing its relationship with Commission Junction.

R.O.EYE say their “objectives are to further develop the network through servicing the needs of the existing affiliate base, including their effective optimisation and recruiting more publishers. We are also working with eBay to maximise activity from new affiliate business models, which are at the cutting edge of affiliate marketing and are beginning to generate significant volume. “

Grand objectives and corporate chat aside, I have to say that I’m geniunely delighted for the team at R.O.EYE. If you’d asked me yesterday who would be associated with this huge brand name I’d have said “I dunno, some faceless big London agency who don’t actually have a clue about affiliate marketing or how to deal with the affiliate base. No doubt they’ll have fed Ebay a load of branding and corporate nonsense and blinded them with their association with other big names like Sony or Apple.”

How wrong could you be?! I apologise humbly Ebay, for underestimating your good judgement.

I’ve always held the Manchester based team in very high regard. The account managers there have always been very responsive, knowledgeable, and most importantly – gosh darned nice people to deal with. I think the fact a big name like Ebay have chosen a team who actually have decent, in-depth knowledge and good relationships with their affiliates bodes really well for the future of the network in the UK (and says something about the way Ebay want the programme to be run).

It’s a long time since I have done anything with Ebay, but I think having a contactable team in the UK with a proven track record within the UK scene will do wonders in terms of my own inclination to work with them. I’d like to think that this attitude will be fairly representative of a number of my industry colleagues.

Pretty exciting times at R.O.EYE and I’m really looking forward to seeing the direction they take the programme in. In my very humble opinion decisions like these are very positive for our industry and I look forward to seeing the affiliate centred developments to the Ebay network in the coming months and years.

Congrats guys, it’s great to see some fellow Northerners doing well

Oh, and the shiny new Ebay team are Chris Worthy, Ben Friedman or Pooja Kashyap. Give them a shout if you’d like to find out more about how you can work with them and Ebay. Contact number can be found on the R.O.EYE website.

Apart from other nice surprises in my inbox recently, POR sent me an e-mail over the weekend that impresses the hell out of me! I’ve got an old site which I used to use to push through traffic to an adult toy shop they used to have on board. It gets negligable traffic these days, so I didn’t bother my backside updating when the merchant left.

I was delighted to get the following e-mail on Sunday: -

On the 06th June a visitor to your website clicked on an Affiliate URL for a Merchant who has closed its Affiliate Program with Paid On Results.

The visitor was shown our Expired Links page, and given several other related Merchants they may be interested in. This visitor followed one of our related links and went onto make a purchase with Sex Shop 365.

Normally the commission due would just be added to your account, however in this case you are currently not an Affiliate of Sex Shop 365. In order for us to pass the commission onto you we first need you to join the Sex Shop 365 Affiliate Program

You can do this as normal though your Affiliate Control Panel, once you have joined and been approved for this Merchant we will add the commission due to you into your account.

If you have any questions please let us know.

So I duly joined the programme as they suggested, and whaddya know? £3.64 magically appeared in my affiliate account a day or so later. I’ve probably not been paying attention, but I’d no idea POR had this functionality. I think it’s a great thing for affiliates such as myself who have hordes of old, unloved, and out of date sites.

Not a huge commission, but definately one of the sweetest i’ve had in recent times. So a belated “well done” to Paid On Results, and yet another reason why I should be doing more with them to add to my list!

After all my moaning and general gnashing of teeth recently regarding the often awful treatment of affiliates, it is finally time to share an actual bonafide decent experience.

I’m currently in the process of setting up a bit of a site devoted to womens car insurance. It’s a while since I’ve done anything in the finance or insurance sector, so I’m painstakingly watching what I’m doing lest the FSA come along and demand my first born son because of a poorly-worded description of a policy.

I noticed that most women’s insurance companies such as Sheilas Wheels, Diamond, and Diva Female Car Insurance were with Online Media Group. I decided to apply to the network as soon as I had enough of the site together to show them how I was going to be presenting all their insurance merchants to all my budding female readers. I had heard a few folk saying nice things about how responsive OMG were, so I was hoping for prompt action on my application.

Within 24 hours they let me know I’d been declined. Puzzled, I sent a support e-mail asking why and discovered from their prompt reply I’d accidently mis-typed my own URL (I must have been having one of my regular blonde moments). So once that was cleared up, I immediately got an e-mail welcoming me to the network from an account manager who will be dealing with my account. Nice touch. This was then followed by another e-mail from aforementioned lovely account lady asking a bit more about what I was looking to promote and what other sites I had. Goodness. Two good things in one day. “Can they better that?” I thought.

“Yes, they can.” Was the answer this morning when I discovered three e-mails in my inbox informing me OMG have helpfully signed me up to six womens car insurance related retailers giving me a nice head start on a bit of admin.

It’s such a small thing, it’s quite ridiculous I’m that pleased about this that I have written a nice blog post about it. It just goes to show what a point of differentiation you can achieve by doing some relatively minor, helpful tasks for all your new affiliates.

What a great start to my womens car insurance affiliate career!

Keep it up OMG…. and please… don’t disappoint me, I don’t think I’ve the strength for any more Network related outbursts this week. My other half’s sick of walking on eggshells the whole time. Don’t do it for me, do it for Duncan!

A while ago I had a $4300 claw back from my CJ account with absolutely no warning or explaination. This was for commissions that had been paid out 12 months previously. At the time, I was mighty damned pissed off (who wouldn’t be?!?). It turned out that the commissions were from a merchant that had gone bankrupt. CJ then clawed back every penny from yours truly. The merchant in question was Wealth of Nations Clothing by Judy French.

I posted at the time on A4UForum, and to my surprise CJ were extremely responsive. They explained what had happened quickly on the forum, and even called me in Australia to say how sorry they were about it all.

At the time they promised to look into whether or not I might get a small amount back from the initial deposit paid by the merchant, and also said they owed me a big, big favour for the inconvenience. “We’ll see what we can do for you and drop you a line about it”, the nice young chap on the phone said. “Wow!!”, I thought. “What an improvement from CJ. I pledge never to sully their good name again.”

What have I heard in the 8 weeks since? Absolutely hee haw from CJ. Thanks guys! In honour of your excellent customer service skills and another recent annoyance, I have written a heartbreaking poem outlining your cruel betrayal of a trusting young affiliate beauty (what do you mean “who’s that?” Its me!)

An Ode To CJ – A Modern Day Tale of Love Gone Awry

Oh dear CJ what doth thy say?
My beloved commission has gone away.

Thine accounts payable did’st not insist
‘Pon payment demands that were dismissed.

12 long months they did slide by
And off with your money Miss French did fly.

What course of action, I hear you say?
For your mistakes I must pay.

Plundered my affiliate account,
CJ took the full amount.

Foul great stench did I kick up,
Bad publicity they picked up.

With golden tounge dids’t they woo,
Yet all their promises turned to poo.

The moral of this affiliate tale?
CJ’s policies will make thy wail!

Umm… I have no idea where that little ditty came from. Medic!

I’ve never used Deal Group Media as an affiliate, so I asked my good friend Steven Marwick of Virtual Cards to give me his thoughts on how DGM perform as a network. After all, who better to review a network than it’s own affiliates?

Network Name: Deal Group Media
URL: http://www.dgm-uk.com

Contact Details:
Unit 800
Highgate Studios
53 – 79 Highgate Road
London NW5 1TL

Telephone: 0207 691 1880

Type of Merchants Available: Deal Group Media have
many high profile clients, particularly in the mobile
phone and broadband internet sectors. They also have a
significant number of well known charities working
exclusively with them. They attract many big name
merchants, despite well documented and ongoing
problems with their DGM Pro software.

Payments: Payments are made monthly in arrears with
Deal Group Media.

2nd Tier Commissions: No.

Support Quality : Poor. It is very difficult to get
answers to email queries with this network. They seem
to prefer to deal with affiliates over the phone,
which is far from an optimal use of time for many
affiliates.

Merchant Performance Metrics Available: No. It is
possible to find out how a merchant is performing for
you but there is not any indication of how a merchant
is performing accross the network.

Telephone: 0207 927 8115

Type of Merchants Available: Affiliate Future has a fair few travel merchants on its books and is therefore a firm favourite with affiliates specialising in this area. Virgin Holidays, Aspro Tours, Thrifty Car Rental & Portland Direct are there to name just a few. They also look a little more favourably on adult type merchandise such as toys, lingerie and DVD’s than most other affiliate networks.

Payments: Minimum payout is £25 for which Payments tend to be made around 12 to 16 days after the end of the month in which you earn them, so Affiliate Future earn lots of brownie points for helping out affiliates with their cash flow.

2nd Tier Commissions: Yes. You earn 5% of all commissions from a referred affiliate.

Support Quality : Good. One reason why Affiliate Future is so popular with many affiliates is its reputation for responsiveness and good communication. In my own dealings with them I’ve rarely waited more than a few hours for a response directed either via their online contact form or by direct e-mail to one of their friendly staff.

Merchant Performance Metrics Available: No.

Keyword tracking: No

Search Term Tracking: Yes. All affiliate links have this built in. Just paste in your desired identifier after “&tracking=” and you’ll be well on the way to search term tracking heaven!

Referring URL Tracking: No

Custom Content Units: No

Data Feeds: Yes. These can also be delivered directly to the ftp location of your choice when updated.

Type Of Programmes: (i.e per lead, per sale, per click, pay per call etc)

Per Sale: Yes
Per lead: Yes
Per Click: No
Per Call: No

This network is most definitely one that inspires loyalty from its affiliates, and with good reason. They are responsive, frequently seen to look after the interests of their affiliates, and have some industry leading performance incentives in the form of their annual affiliate jaunt to sunny Barbados.

I do find their merchant directory structure slightly frustrating at times, it could be far more searchable and easy to navigate. However, in the face of all their positives this is a minor bugbear.

Give them a go!

Tradedoubler’s portfolio includes affiliate programmes from American Express, Dell, Ann Summers, Natwest, and Opodo to name but a few.

Min Payout:£30.

Payments: Payments tend to be made two months in arrears. However, Tradedoubler has some merchants available to promote who “prepay” commissions. This means that whatever commissions you earn will appear in your bank account the following month. There are a few of these around, so good scope to speed up your affiliate payments!

2nd Tier Commissions: Nope.

Support Quality : Tradedoubler have had some fairly chronic issues with giving affiliates appropriate support in the past. The need to contact a particular account manager direct about affiliate queries has sometimes led to delays or total lack of response. However, they are now attempting to rectify this situation by creating a dedicated team of “publisher managers”. This has started to work well, and they have recently promised to answer all affiliate queries the same day if submitted before 4pm (Mon-Fri). A marvellous step, but we shall see if they fall on their own sword over this one!

Merchant Performance Metrics Available: Yes. Tradedoubler displays these in a slightly different format from that which you might find on other networks. There are two “epc” columns. One displays the 90th EPC. The other is AVG (Average) paid EPC. Still awake? OK, listen carefully as I will only say this once and you will forget it immediately.

The EPC bit is earnings per hundred clicks earned by publishers during the previous 3 months. The average is calculated from the activity all of the publishers who got paid for that programme during that period. The 90th percentile is calculated from all publishers in the programme.

The average is the sum of the earnings divided by the number of unique visitors delivered by publishers, whereas the percentile is a rank, i.e. the actual value for the publisher that ranks 90th out of the top 100 affiliates for a programme.

These metrics are probably excellent, but unless you spend a fair bit of time understanding how they work, they may not mean terribly much to you!

Keyword tracking: Yes. This is known as the EPI on the Tradedoubler network.

Search Term Tracking: Yes. There is an “EPI2” column in their reporting. You can access this by clicking on the “event breakdown” report in their reporting interface. This gives information on the search term entered if you are sending traffic direct to merchant via PPC.

Referring URL Tracking: No.

Custom Content Units: Yes. Unfortunately, the Tradedoubler “Adtool” was developed with the best intentions, but hasn’t really been terribly usable for affiliates as yet. The system that was released was not as user friendly as hoped and has proved difficult for affiliates to manipulate in order to be able to get the right kind of product into a content unit. This one is pretty high to the top of my list of things likely to make me use the “F” word at high decibelage.

Data Feeds: Yes. There is a functionality to grab details of up to 100 products as part of their standard affiliate control panel. To access the entire feed for a merchant you must request it from Tradedoubler and you must then have the ability to host the file yourself to download / gain access. If you are a newbie, prepare for a small amount of confusion on this one, it’s not incredibly intuitive.

Type Of Programmes:

Per Sale: Yes
Per lead: Yes
Per Click: Yes
Per Call: Yes

In line with their client base, Tradedoubler tend to be my biggest network in terms of earnings but its not my favourite. I find the merchant directory hard to browse around (although it does offer excellent performance metrics when you are browsing through the merchant categories).
