Hey Terry, I do use shared hosting from Clook although I'll probably need to upgrade in the next few months to a dedicated server.

I've never found sites of mine have been penalised just through association with that IP range. I don't think Google could do this without zapping lots of innocent people on shared servers. It may be something they'd do manually if they had a problem with a particuar group of sites and identified a big issue, but I feel it's perfectly safe to be on a shared server.

Hello Kirsty, good work on the article, some good tips there.

I noticed you recommended clook as a hosting provider, but one question remains, do you use their shared hosting option for your sites?

I am a bit sceptical when it comes to shared hosting but at the same time it is a good way to reduce the bills and also manage multiple sites, but when it comes to SEO and niche sites I always have a niggling feeling at the back of my mind that if one goes down (by google themselves), they all go... due to the IP range being the same.

Just wondering your thoughts on that? :)

Good post Kirsty. WordPress all the way. It's really easy to customize and super seo friendly too. Every single affiliate site I have has been built in WordPress.

Hi Kirsty,
thanks for this, found your site through affilaites 4 u forum. I am new to AM but have a couple of ecommerce sites...i've found a niche but am really struggling with a suitable template. All the ones i have found you have to pay for. I jsut want a simple 'shop' type template with a 'buy now' button that takes my customer to the affilaite store. Do you know of one/how I can do this?

That is a very, very good point. I do often say to people that a good way to deal with that issue is to buy a more general domain name, go for a sub-niche within it, and then expand things if the site goes well.

However, I decided to keep things simple for the post as I'd have then needed to explain how to expand and create that larger site!!

It's always hard to know how much detail to go into with these types of posts. How much info is too much??

Hi Kirsty,

Great post for people looking to get started in AM.

One thing which I have fallen foul of in the past is when choosing a tight niche to start with, also choosing just as tight a domain name.

It all looks good to start with but then when your product i.e maxidresses are a roaring success and you want to expand into other styles of dresses, you struggle to expand justmaxidresses.com and it means you have to start over with a new, more generic domain and build up trust and links again.
