Google did say that the update was complete and that they were happy with it. However, I hope further adjustments are to come (not holding my breath mind you!).

Some sites I’ve had slapped are really decent niche resources offering a great draw together of products that are related but often spread over many different merchant sites. Content is great, cross linkage is too… the only issue with them is not huge amounts of links. However I’d still have thought this type of site was what Google was looking for based on their own statements re: the update.

We can only hope!

I own http://www.prosperent.com which is an affiliate oriented advertising network. We have seen a sharp decline in our publishers long tail traffic starting on the 3rd of June, and being punctuated again around the 12th as well. The declines appear to be across the board. When viewing the new “results”, the overall quality in Google appears to have taken a huge hit. Searching for common long tail phrases produces absolute garbage. Hopefully they are still tweaking the dials.

It certainly helped me to make sense of what’s going on right now when I was writing the post Gary. However, one confusing thing I’ve seen is that several of my unimportant (thank god!) sites were slapped around June 4th. Seems quite a few people had similar, so bears investigation. Can’t work out if it’s a separate adjustment or related to Mayday. Never dull eh!!

Great post Kirsty. You summarized Google’s updates really well. I guess some Merchants sites could be affected by this and in a good way will still rely on us Affiliates to keep sending them sales. I suspect we’ll also see more sales offers etc if merchants are losing out on long tail traffic.

Thanks Kirsty, this was a very enjoyable read, I love the graphical representation. We have had a number of affiliates who say the caffeine update has affected their rankings but with Google you just never know.
