I never remove footer links from my sites. Its a very bad habit. Actually we get free wordpress themes because of the footer credit links to the authors. If all the people around world started to remove the links, theme authors would stop creating free themes, then we’d spend about 100$ for a wordpress theme, also the themes are licensed so its illegal to remove the footer links. If a theme author complaints to the hosting provider, it’ll result the suspension of the hosting.

What about the wordpress link it self? I’ve bought a theme and the only link I’ve got in my footer is the WP’s one, but I’m not sure if I have to keep it?!
